Reimagining Familiar Faces: The Cast of Like a Dragon: Yakuza forges New Paths in Adaptation
The landscape of video game adaptations has seen significant change in recent years. Amazon's upcoming series, Like a Dragon: Yakuza, is another step in this evolving trend. While the Yakuza series may not have achieved widespread popularity in the West, the excitement surrounding the release of Like a Dragon: Infinite Wealth suggests a dedicated fanbase is emerging, comprised of passionate supporters. This adds intriguing layers to the anticipation surrounding the show's debut.
Interestingly, the cast for this new adaptation does not seem to share the same enthusiasm for the game series. In a recent conversation with GamesRadar, it was revealed that the actors have not engaged with the games at all. They were instructed by the creators of the show to not familiarize themselves with the source material, allowing them to build their characters from a fresh perspective.
Ryoma Takeuchi, who portrays Kiryu, remarked that although he is aware of the franchise and its influence globally, he has yet to play the games. He expressed a desire to try them but understood the creative team's reasoning for wanting them to approach their roles without preformed ideas, aiming instead to develop their characters anew.
Similarly, Kento Kaku, who takes on the role of Akira Nishikiyama, emphasized the importance of crafting their own representation of the characters. He mentioned that the intent was to honor the essence of the characters while infusing their own interpretations, citing a commitment to maintaining respect for the original source.
There have been instances where successful adaptations emerged without the cast having any experience with the games, as seen with Fallout. However, given that the cast of Like a Dragon: Yakuza is stepping into pre-existing roles, engaging with the characters could have provided valuable insights. The question remains regarding how this approach will resonate with both fans of the series and new viewers alike.
