With the increase in adult players on its platform, the online game platform, Roblox Corporation, is introducing a new category of games designed specifically for players 17 and older. This development comes as a result of recognizing the rapid growth of mature audiences on the platform, with a 38% rise in daily active users in this age bracket.

The new "17+" category will allow creators to introduce more mature themes and storylines in response to user feedback. In order to engage in this category, participants are required to submit an authentic identification document along with a selfie for the purpose of verification. This adds to the existing categories of 'All ages,' 'Ages 9+', and 'Ages 13+', each allowing different levels of content based on the maturity of the audience.

Interestingly, despite opening the doors to more mature content, Roblox maintains a firm stance against certain elements. Strong language, sexual content, nudity, and depictions of drugs and tobacco remain prohibited across all categories, though the company hints at possible future context-adjusted enabling of strong language. However, age-restricted substances like alcohol have subtle representation—no recognizable brand or explicit depiction, but instead, red plastic cups in a club scene.

Roblox also imposes a blanket ban on simulated gambling, giving creators a 90-day window to update any such content to align with the new guidelines. This, however, doesn't apply to paid random item generators or loot boxes. This move to restrict gambling simulation comes amidst a trend of increasing regulatory scrutiny across gaming platforms.
